Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration

This government agency provides independent oversight of IRS activities, the IRS Oversight Board, and the IRS Office of Chief Counsel in order to promote the fair administration of the Federal tax system in an effective and efficient manner. TIGTA is organizationally part of the Department of the Treasury, but reports only to the Secretary of the Treasury and to Congress. TIGTA was established under the IRS Restructuring and Reform Act of 1998.
