excise tax

A tax on the sale, or production for sale, of specific goods with a country. This tax is an "indirect tax" in that the producer or seller is expected to recover the tax from the buyer by raising the price of the goods sold or produced, as for example with the taxes imposed on gasoline, alcohol, and tobacco.
